Summary

On a global scale, there are approximately 11 million new cases of cancer every year of which 1.8 million cases occur in the US. The high incidence of the disease, its life-threatening nature and its difficult management has resulted in a surge of interest from the pharmaceutical industry during the last decade. At the current time, sales of products used to treat cancer are close to $17 billion. More than 400 companies are investigating new products and approaches for the treatment of cancer and there are close to 450 products in clinical trials of which 80 are in phase III. Just under half of the products in clinical trials are based on biological agents such as vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, cytokines, genes coding for cytokines and protein conjugates. Breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer have received the most attention, with respectively 100 and 90 products in clinical trials. There are more than 1000 products undergoing preclinical in-vivo trials. There is a wide range of activity surrounding the licensing of products in development with deals ranging from several hundreds of thousands of dollars for technology transfer, up to many hundreds of millions of dollars for product rights.

The 250 page report reviews the latest developments within the cancer market in terms of emerging therapies, competition, new technology and approaches to treatment, current and future sales, reported deals and looks at possible scenarios for the treatment of different cancer indications during the next five years.
